INDEPENDENCE, OH – June 1, 2011 – A survey conducted by Alliance Staffing Solutions among nearly 400 employees and human resource executives shows that most people today consider their companies a good place to work — although company execs tended to score themselves higher than rank-and-file employees.
Alliance Staffing Solutions, a full-service recruitment agency with offices in Cuyahoga, Summit, Portage and Franklin counties, conducted the email survey during April 2011 among its client base, with 312 employees and 51 company executives responding. While most respondents gave their employers high marks for creating a positive environment, some notable differences appeared among employees and supervisors when comparing answers to the same questions. (Questions ranked on a scale of 1-5, with 5.0 as Strongly Agree.)

“In eight out of ten variables, employers rated themselves higher than their employees when asked to judge the employee culture they’ve built,” noted company President Aaron Grossman. “Perhaps that’s human nature, but it does indicate that employees want their voices to be heard more frequently.”
The largest gap was when respondents were asked to rank the statement, “We encourage employee suggestions to improve our company.” With 5.0 being “Strongly Agree,” employees gave their bosses a 3.82 score, while the HR execs gave themselves a 4.39 score.
The survey pointed out a discrepancy in the attitude companies exhibit toward their workforce. While employers gave themselves a 4.45 out of 5.0 for the statement, “My company cares about its employees,” workers themselves only agreed 4.15 out of 5.0.
In two of 10 survey questions, employers were actually harder on themselves than their staff. Employees gave their jobs a 4.34 agreement score when asked, “I have an effective and productive working relationship with my supervisor,” compared to just 4.06 from the supervisors themselves. They also seemed to enjoy their jobs more than their supervisors expected; employees scored a 4.19 agreement out of 5.0 with the statement, “I look forward to coming to work,” while supervisors rated at just 3.90 the similar question, “Our employees look forward to coming to work.”
