Looking to land a job in an industrial or manufacturing setting? When it comes to the world of industrial and manufacturing work, resumes can be just a little bit different than they might be for an office job.
Robin Doershuck, Director of Sales at Alliance Solutions Group, has more than 10 years of experience in staffing and recruiting. Robin’s worked with hundreds of employers both locally and nationally to fill thousands of jobs. Here are three tips from Robin to improve your chances of getting your resume into the “yes” pile:
1. Start with a professional header. This is your first chance to make a good impression with a company or recruiter. But what does a professional header look like? Be sure to include your name, phone number and email address, but avoid including a headshot. Also, if your current email address isn’t professional, consider signing up for another account. Consider an address that uses a your first and last name, or some variation of it.
2. Create a relevant and specific objective. You might even consider mentioning the specific company you’re applying for in your objective. This will show potential employers that you’re serious about their specific company. At the very least, be sure to tailor your objective to fit each role you’re applying for. Also, keep in mind your resume isn’t the place to include hobbies or talk about your family.
3. Make your resume scannable. When a potential employer is scanning though hundreds of resumes, you’ll want to make sure yours is easy to read. Do this with bullet point lists and short key words and phrases. Try to include as many hard-skills as you can, including education points and experience. When you’re crafting the experience section of your resume, there’s no reason to go back more than 10 years or to include a lot of details bout positions that aren’t relevant to the job your currently hoping to land.
